My language learning journey

Hello everyone and welcome back to my newest blog. This time I will be sharing mainly my English language learning journey. I started learning English at school in 3rd grade and since that I have been studying English yearly for approximately 12 years. Different languages have always fascinated me so that is most likely the reason why I have always enjoyed learning them at school and in my free time, and they have never been a nuisance to me. I would not consider myself super passionate about languages, but I see them as a great and useful hobby.   I have best learned foreign languages by learning new words and increasing my vocabulary. That’s how I learned some English from video games before I even started learning it at school. If you wish to learn English or some other languages, I highly recommend trying some story-driven video games with lots of dialogue. That’s where I have learned many new words over the years, and occasionally still do. I believe the best way to...

An intriguing chapter from a book

Hello everyone and welcome back to my blog, and yes, I know that it has been a while since my last post, but I have been super busy lately with school, work and life in general. Now I’m back and I’m excited to share my thoughts about something that I recently read. I had enough time to read the first chapter from the book called The Pragmatic Programmer, which was written by Andrew Hunt and David Thomas. It was released in 1999 so quite a while ago, however, many of the topics and points the book is covering are still relevant today.   I chose this book because it seemed interesting, and I was curious to know what the pragmatic programmer will be like. I think the important part for my classmates to know is the goals of becoming a pragmatic programmer. I agreed with some of the goals that the authors presented such as stay current, take classes and so on but I disagreed with one point which was “learn at least one new language a year”. In my opinion, it’s good to know many lang...

My favourite project

Hello everyone and welcome back to my blog. Today I’m talking about my best project that I’ve been part of, which isn’t an IT project. It’s a play that we did in my old upper secondary school in ninth grade, and I was playing one of the two main characters. Usually those plays in schools haven’t been that complex or long, instead they were mostly just comedies or people goofing around on the stage but ours was on a different level. Our play was called “Musta aurinko nousee” (The black sun rises) which also happens to share the same name as a popular Finnish song. It told a story about a group of teenagers whose classmate died tragically and their ways to cope with it.   I was working with my drama group. We did short plays or skits in the past, but this was our final project before graduating. We started practicing approximately three months before the main event. Two hours a week and our homework was to practise our lines. After getting one of the leading roles, I reali...

My first ever blog post

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog. I’m a Finnish student who’s studying information processing. I’m a social young man who is always eager to learn something new. I chose this field because I’m a huge fan of video games and new technology. This field exceeded my expectations in some ways, but little did I know what I got myself into. I had no idea what programming was about or some other interesting features and facts about computers. It already feels like I’ve learned a lot and at the same time knowing nothing at all. All in all, I’m enjoying my time here studying information processing at the university of Oulu. Even though I’m social and open-minded I don’t want my blog to be too poignant, but I might share something if it’s relevant enough.  I have never been a huge fan of blogs or sharing my feelings to everyone but after reading an article about “Every developer should have a blog”, I got a lot of new information about blogs and the advantages of blogging. I wou...
