My first ever blog post
Hello everyone and welcome to my blog. I’m a Finnish student who’s studying information processing. I’m a social young man who is always eager to learn something new. I chose this field because I’m a huge fan of video games and new technology. This field exceeded my expectations in some ways, but little did I know what I got myself into. I had no idea what programming was about or some other interesting features and facts about computers. It already feels like I’ve learned a lot and at the same time knowing nothing at all. All in all, I’m enjoying my time here studying information processing at the university of Oulu. Even though I’m social and open-minded I don’t want my blog to be too poignant, but I might share something if it’s relevant enough.
I have never been a huge fan of blogs or sharing my feelings to everyone but after reading an article about “Every developer should have a blog”, I got a lot of new information about blogs and the advantages of blogging. I would say the most beneficial advice was that it helps you to learn things faster because writing about the topic helps you to understand it better. I’ve also heard a phrase “You have never truly understood the topic if you cannot explain it”. It’s also a great thing to have a routine when you are blogging, because otherwise it might be difficult to motivate yourself and write only when you feel like writing.
My language learning goals are simple. I want to have a bigger vocabulary. I would especially want to improve my information technology vocabulary because that’s what I’m studying, and it would be super beneficial to know the most important words in the long run. I’m already experienced and comfortable speaking English because my girlfriend isn’t Finnish and that’s why I probably speak more English than Finnish in my daily life. I’m used to writing and listening English thanks to the internet and social media. Then lastly, I couldn’t care less about grammar. And before anyone judges me, yes, I know it’s important to know some grammar but that shouldn’t be the focus while learning languages. Everyone makes mistakes but the most important thing is that you are being understood.
Since I want to get better at vocabulary I need to have the right learning techniques. Perhaps the best one would be learning five to ten new words a day. For example, if you’re reading a text, mark or write the new words down on a paper and after you’re done with the text look up the meanings of the words. That way it isn’t going to get too exhausting. When you encounter words that are difficult to remember, underline those words and come back for those the next day. Of course, there are so many options and techniques to choose from, but this one has worked the best for me. I think that was enough introduction so that was all for today and next time I will go deeper into different topics.
Really liked your post! I can really relate to that feeling about learning a lot but still knowing nothing at all, that’s what keeps me motivated! And thanks for reminding me that you don’t have to be perfect with grammar, I think that people might take too much pressure about it sometimes – myself included.
VastaaPoistaIf you wish to expand your vocab, my best piece of advice is: books and YouTube. This is how I learned English, and this is how I learn new words every day. I may not be able to directly translate them to my own language, but at least I can use them correctly in English contexts. I hope you succeed regarding your goals and have fun on the way!
VastaaPoistaThis blog post is very well written and I relate to some of the points made. Especially the "I feel like I’ve learned a lot and at the same time know nothing at all". I also agree with you on your point about grammar, because vocabulary has always been a vital thing when communicating with someone that does not speak your native language. Unlike grammar.
VastaaPoistaYour post is interesting as it gives a personal touch to your learning journey. I like your openness about the challenges and surprises you’ve encountered in your studies. The idea that explaining a topic helps you understand it better is an insightful one. Your approach to expanding your vocabulary with daily word practice is effective. Looking forward to your future posts!
VastaaPoistaYou said you're not a fan of writing a blog, yet your post and writing overall was very engaging and reletable. Keep going!
